Welcome to Team YBC. Yves, Bec and Claire make up the team and have created this page because they share a very personal connection with HeartKids.
Close friends and cardiac nursing colleagues, Bec and Claire, share a very special bond as they are both heart transplant recipients due to congenital heart disease.
The pair will compete in the triathlon with their dear friend and colleague, leading paediatric cardiac surgeon and heart researcher, Professor Yves d’Udekem.
Please support their efforts.
Here is a bit more about the trio:
Yves is Deputy Director of Cardiac Surgery at Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne (RCH), an internationally-renowned researcher into congenital heart disease, and repeat recipient of HeartKids funding for his important research into the outcomes after complex Fontan surgery and aortic arch repair.
Many patients and families have received exceptional care by Yves and the cardiac team at RCH. A self-confessed adrenaline junkie, there is no holding Yves back from enjoying extreme sports, especially while exploring different parts of the world with his family. Yves will be doing the swimming leg at 2018 Noosa Triathlon.
Bec is a heart transplant recipient, HeartKids Youth Engagement Co-ordinator, a Transition Support Service team member at RCH, and works with Yves’ and the team in the specialist area of Heart Research. She is also a multiple medal winner (gold and silver no less!) at the 2018 Australian Transplant Games in QLD, as well as achieving stunning results at the World Transplant Games in Spain last year. Bec will be on the bike at the 2018 Noosa Triathlon.
Claire's heart transplant at age 14 was actually performed by Yves d’Udekem at RCH. She now works alongside Yves as a PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) nurse. Known to take on any challenge presented to her, Claire is an all-round athlete and exceptional basketballer. Claire will do the running leg of the Noosa Triathlon.
